SlideShare - YouTube for Powerpoint

October 26, 2006

Have you ever created that perfect PowerPoint presentation that you just wanted to share with everyone but didn’t want to email a 10MB file out? No, neither have I, but some people have.

SlideShare logo

SlideShare is a new service that lets you upload any office document and view and share them in a YouTube/Google Video kind of way.

Whilst a great service, the user agreement grants SideShare ownership rights. Plus there is currently no way of having private presentations, so corporate sensitive presentations will still have to be emailed, or you could use Adobe Connect Professional, or arrange a Webex meeting, or just go and turn up at someone’s office with a laptop. Or just use a pen and paper.

Thanks to TechCrunch UK who also point out the beta tonicpoint service.

Song of the Day - White Town

October 25, 2006

A balst from the past for you today - Your Woman by White Town (1997). Note this plays very quietly.

White Town is a techno-pop act from the United Kingdom, and is the work of one man, Jyoti Mishra. Mishra was born in Rourkela, India, on July 30, 1966, and has lived in England since the age of three. White Town is often regarded as a one-hit wonder for its 1997 song “Your Woman”.

Mishra, a straight edger and ex-Marxist often incorporates political concerns in his songs veiled in terms of personal relationships (as in his only hit). After a troubled working relationship with EMI Records, Mishra was dropped from the label in 1997 and since then has gone back to working with indie labels like Parasol Records. His last album, 2000’s Peek & Poke received moderately enthusiastic reviews but sold poorly compared to his major label work.[citation needed]

In 2005, White Town contributed the song “The Pnac Cabal” to the charity album Voyces United for UNHCR.

A new 7″ vinyl single, the A New Surprise EP was released in September 2006 by Swedish indie label Heavenly Pop Hits.

Don’t Mention the War, an all new album, is scheduled for release in the fall of 2006 on Mishra’s own label, Bzangy Records.

Mishra currently lives in Derby.

The debate over stem cell research

October 25, 2006

Whilst the merits for and arguments against stem cell research are beyond the boundaries of this website, it’s hard not to be moved when you see this advert starring Michael J Fox. Of course, that’s the point, but as Tom Wilson (Biff in Back to the Future) says, “He’s a nice guy”….

The man who designed the style of Penguin books died in September, and the Design Museum in London is holding an exhibition of his work. Alan Fletcher: fifty years of graphic work (and play) is being held between 11 November and 18 February.Â

Alan Fletcher is one of the most influential figures in post-war British graphic design. The fusion of the cerebral European tradition with North America’s emerging pop culture in the formulation of his distinct approach made him a pioneer of independent graphic design in Britain during the late 1950s and 1960s. As a founding partner of Pentagram in the 1970s, Fletcher helped to establish a model of combining commercial partnership with creative independence. He also developed some of the most memorable graphic schemes of the era, notably the identities of Reuters and the Victoria & Albert Museum, and made his mark on book design as creative director of Phaidon.Â

Check out his designs for Pirelli and the V&A here or better still, go along.
