August 6, 2008
Five Boston Globe staffers race their Toyota Prius hybrids from a Whole Foods in Cambridge to the Hummer dealership in Norwood. Highest MPG wins, though some slow driving was probably necessary! Only three minutes long, you can watch the video below (or click here if you can’t see it).
Upgrade Your Old Computer
August 5, 2008
Being a bit of a computer geek, I love to upgrade my computer as much as possible before buying a new one. Not only is it satisfying to see a slow computer whizz along with some new RAM, it’s also much cheaper and avoids the tricky problem of disposing with the old computer.
There are plenty of other good reasons to upgrade your current computer. Some facts from the lovethe1yourewith campaign (how to upgrade your computer instead of buying a new one):
- The energy required to produce a new computer is enough to run a computer for 10 years
- The energy saved by extending the life of your computer by a year could run it for 2 years
- Help put a stop to the 220 million tons of e-Waste generated annually in the USA
The website has some easy videos to show you how to add more RAM, manage process, refresh your operating system and replace your laptop battery. Not for beginners but you should be able to find someone who can do it for you if you’re not comfortable. They have a nice fun video too (embedded below).

How To Save Energy
May 20, 2008
Whilst we have hundreds of tips throughout this site on how to save energy, CBS News in the US recently had a series of articles about saving energy. I see more and more news articles on US television about going green, the benefits of going green and especially about how it can save you money. It’s what a lot of us have been saying for years and it’s great to see it becoming more and more widespread.

Aspen Institute’s Environmental Forum Interviews
May 6, 2008
This was passed to me from Marilyn of the fascinating Intelligent Travel a few weeks back.

National Geographic’s magazine site has some interviews with attendees of the Aspen Institute’s Environmental Forum.
Interviewees include Canadian Inuit activist and Nobel Prize nominee Sheila Watt-Cloutier, who says those at the top of the world acutely feel the effects of global warming, climatologist Konrad Steffen talks about the surprising speed of ice loss in Greenland, and friend of Life Goggles Josh Dorfman, author of The Lazy Environmentalist, who explains that fighting climate change doesn’t require busy, stressed-out people to change their nature.
Very interesting, and there are many more so please take a look.
