Lean back. After all the set-up and agonising wait, you’d think you’d do a bit better than this eh? It’s a cruel game.

The art of speed stacking

November 20, 2006

I’ve previously posed the question “What constitues a sport?” and someone pointed me in the direction of speed stacking.

What is speed stacking, you may well ask? You may have already guessed - that it’s stacking things, mainly cups, at speed. The Speed Stacks website (apparently the leader in sport stacking) can show you footage of it from ESPN. Don’t get me started. Also you can buy some cups, should you so wish. In an apparent attempt to win the record for the world’s longest domain name, the World Sport Stacking Association provides details of tournaments near you and tries to standardise the rules and regulations.

For your enjoyment, Emily Fox’s world record cup stacking time of 7.43 seconds. Pretty impressive, and also handy for clearing up the kitchen.

What constitutes a sport?

Now, my boss went to break dancing lessons as a kid. Instead of laughing, you should be jealous.

Now, you’ve got to ask yourself what the hell is that doing on Sky Sports 1? At least they could have that “sport” where the motorcycles drive up that steep hill to see how high they can get. Actually, that should be on the comedy channel…

Is darts a sport? I say “Yes, it’s like the javelin, but on a much smaller scale”. Others say “No, you can’t smoke and drink beer during a sport”. That’s not the dictionary definition though, Dictionary.com says:

  1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
  2. a particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors.
  3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.

Note #3. Seems a little vague to me to be honest. Writing this website is a pleasant pastime, yet I’m hardly breaking a sweat. Any thoughts?
